The Mosquito Bowl: What To Know About Netflix’s New True WWII Story

Netflix just released its next big true-story epic, and it’s the kind of story that sounds too crazy to be true but it is. The Mosquito Bowl, officially revealed today with Netflix’s trailer drop, tells the true story of college football stars who traded NFL futures for the battlefields of World War II, and played one legendary, largely forgotten football game together just before some of them never came home.

The story of Netflix’s The Mosquito Bowl

The film follows four of America’s best collegiate football players, John McLaughry, Bob Bauman, Tony Butkovich and Dave Schreiner, who abandon promising athletic careers to enlist in the Marines after Pearl Harbor and serve in the Pacific Theater. The war pushes them forward, their paths intersecting again in the days leading up to the savage Battle of Okinawa, when a group of Marine servicemen stage an impromptu football game that would later be called the Mosquito Bowl. It’s a story of brotherhood in two ways at once: of teammates, and of soldiers who know they may not all make it out.

The Historical Time Frame of The Mosquito Bowl

The Mosquito Bowl takes place in the Pacific Theater of World War II, beginning in the aftermath of the December 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor and concluding with the Battle of Okinawa in 1945, one of the war’s most ferocious and costly campaigns. The actual game of the Mosquito Bowl was held just before that battle began.

The Cast

Nicholas Galitzine as John McLaughry, Bill Skarsgård as Bob Bauman, Ray Nicholson as Tony Butkovich and Tom Francis as Dave Schreiner. Joining them are Brent Comer as real Notre Dame quarterback George Murphy and also Dominic Bogart, Jack Ingram and Ella Newton. Also in the cast is former NFL punter and sports media personality Pat McAfee, an appropriate bit of casting considering the film’s football roots.

The Mosquito Bowl Budget

Netflix has not released an official production budget for The Mosquito Bowl.

Release Info and Production Background

Peter Berg directs The Mosquito Bowl from a script he co-wrote with Mark L. Smith (The Revenant). It’s based on Pulitzer Prize winner Buzz Bissinger’s nonfiction book, The Mosquito Bowl: A Game of Life and Death in World War II. Berg produces through his Film 44 banner, the same studio behind Netflix’s American Primeval and Painkiller, along with Brian Grazer and Alex Gayner of Imagine Entertainment, with Ezra Emanuel, Bissinger and Jeb Brody executive producing. The film was shot all over Australia, with Queensland and northern New South Wales standing in for the Marine training grounds and the Pacific Theater settings.

The Mosquito Bowl film will open in select theaters in the U.S. on Oct. 30, 2026, before debuting on Netflix worldwide on Nov. 25, 2026 the day before Thanksgiving.

Who’s gonna like this movie

This is made for audiences who want their war dramas to be based in fact rather than pure spectacle – fans of Peter Berg’s earlier work like Lone Survivor, Deepwater Horizon and Patriots Day will know his approach immediately. It should also be of particular interest to fans of sports dramas, history buffs who want to learn more about the lesser-known stories of WWII, and anyone who enjoys character-driven films about brotherhood, sacrifice and the weight of decisions made in impossible circumstances.

Interesting Facts

  • Buzz Bissinger, author of the book this film is based on, also wrote the original “Friday Night Lights,” which inspired Peter Berg’s 2004 film and the subsequent TV series. That makes The Mosquito Bowl a true reunion for Berg and Bissinger, two decades after they first worked together, on yet another true story about football meeting something far larger than the game itself.
  • The stakes in this story are also literal: One of the four main players, Tony Butkovich, was a first-round-caliber NFL prospect who enlisted in the Marines instead of playing professional football. He was later killed in action at the fighting at Okinawa.

The Mosquito Bowl opens in select theaters October 30, 2026 and streams globally on Netflix beginning November 25, 2026.
