6 Things to Know Before Watching Owen Wilson’s Runner

Runner is a movie that exists somewhere between a cartel thriller and a buddy comedy. It is based on a premise so simple it borders on absurd. Deliver a human liver across a city in three hours or a child dies, only now the mob wants the organ too. This is the sort of pitch that could go badly wrong in the wrong hands. Here’s why you should still bother to pay attention.

1. The set-up is a proper weird-stakes-ticking-clock thriller.

Hank Malone (Alan Ritchson) is a high-end courier in Brisbane, Australia, whose job is to transport a donor liver to a critically ill child on the Gold Coast a three-hour window that becomes a nightmare the second a cartel decides the organ is worth more on the black market. With fellow courier Ben Bishop (Owen Wilson), Hank spends the rest of the movie trying to outrun, outdrive and, occasionally, out-punch anyone who gets between him and a delivery that can’t be late.

2. It is set in the present day, and it’s not a true story.

This one is all fiction so don’t go looking for the real Hank Malone. There’s no historical event or true crime case behind it, it’s an original screenplay, contemporary in setting, built purely as a high-concept action premise rather than a dramatization of anything that actually happened.

3. The pairing is the whole engine of the movie Runner.

Ritchson brings the same physical intensity that’s defined his run on Reacher, playing Hank as a recovering man trying to stay gentle in a job that keeps demanding otherwise he’s a year sober and insists, early on, that he doesn’t hurt people anymore. Wilson supplies the exact opposite energy: loose, comic, unbothered even when everything is on fire. It’s a classic odd-couple setup, and reviewers have already noted it’s carrying more of the film’s appeal than the plot mechanics themselves.

4. This is a legitimately important swing for the studio.

Runner isn’t your typical action movie it’s Angel Studios’ first R-rated release, ever. Best known for faith-based, family-friendly hits, this is the same company, so a cartel shootout thriller is a real departure from their usual playbook. How it pans out could decide the studio’s willingness to gamble on genre films outside its comfort zone going forward.

5. It was shot on the location it was actually set in.

A rarer choice than you’d think. The film was shot on location all over Australia, perfectly matching the Brisbane-to-Gold-Coast setting of the film. That’s not a given in this genre, where plenty of films fake their geography for tax incentives or logistics. In this case, the real place is part of the identity of the film.

6. Deeper than its two leads runs the cast.

The film’s antagonist is Rodrigo Santoro, with Leila George, Adriana Barraza, Sullivan Stapleton, Peta Sergeant and Geraldine Hakewill backing him up. Director Scott Waugh has built a résumé on physical, stunt-driven action filmmaking Act of Valor, Need for Speed, Expend4bles and that’s certainly the feeling here, a movie that seems to favor momentum over subtlety. There’s no official budget revealed, but the scale of it suggests it’s more mid-range than a tentpole blockbuster.

Who Should Watch Runner

If you like your action with a sense of humor, not grim seriousness buddy comedies, chase thrillers, movies in which the hero and his reluctant partner bicker their way through gunfights Runner is built just for you. It’s less interested in twisty plotting than in momentum, chemistry and the particular pleasure of watching two mismatched men refuse to die on a deadline.
