New Harry Potter TV Series Sets for Christmas 2026 on HBO

Harry Potter, the story that defined our childhood and gave us countless unforgettable memories, is returning to reawaken those magical feelings once again. But this time, it’s not coming back as a movie, it’s coming as a TV series, which makes the excitement even more for fans all around the world.

And while a two-hour movie has to rush past half the book to even fit the runtime, this new HBO series has the time to finally do justice to the world J.K. Rowling built one full season for one full book.

What the Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone Series Is All About

The first season, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, tells the story most fans already know by heart: an orphaned boy living miserably with his aunt and uncle discovers, on his eleventh birthday, that he’s actually a wizard and that he’s about to begin a new life at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. On his way he befriends his two closest friends, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger, and starts to unravel the mystery of the Sorcerer’s Stone and the shadow of the dark wizard who killed his parents.

It’s the same beloved origin story, but with room to breathe, with small character moments and side details from the book that the films simply didn’t have time to explore finally getting their due.

Dominic McLaughlin is playing Harry Potter, with Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley, all three selected from a casting call that reportedly drew more than 30,000 auditions. They’re backed up by an extremely stacked adult cast: John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, Katherine Parkinson as Molly Weasley, and Warwick Davis the only actor to return from the original films reprising his role as Filius Flitwick. This is complemented by Rory Wilmot as Neville Longbottom, Louise Brealey as Madam Hooch, Anton Lesser as Garrick Ollivander and others.

Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone premieres Christmas Day, December 25, 2026 on HBO and HBO Max a nice surprise for fans, as the show was originally expected to arrive sometime in 2027. And it’s a good time to drop it, right in the middle of the holiday season when so many fans are already re-watching the original movies.

Production Notes

The series is from showrunner Francesca Gardiner, with Succession director Mark Mylod also executive producing, and was filmed at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden in the UK, the same studio where the original film series was made. The show has been in development since January 2021, and HBO has been clear this isn’t just an attempt to recreate the movies shot-for-shot.

Early trailers suggest a darker, more grounded, more book-faithful tone. No budget has been released, but it’s been widely described as one of the most expensive television productions in the works, fitting for a story this beloved. It’s ambitious, too, one season per book, for all seven novels, and HBO has already confirmed writing on Season 2 is underway.
