Mayday: Apple TV’s $100M Bet on Reynolds and Branagh Film

Some movies get a theatrical rollout because a studio believes in them. Others get sent straight to streaming for the exact opposite reason and Mayday is a strange case of the second happening to a project that looks, on paper, like it deserved the first. A nine-figure Cold War action-comedy starring two genuinely major stars, arriving with zero theaters attached to it: that’s the gamble Apple TV+ is making on September 4, and it’s worth understanding exactly why.

What Mayday Is About

Ryan Reynolds stars as Lieutenant Troy “Assassin” Kelly, a hotshot U.S. Navy pilot sent on a top-secret mission into Russian territory at the height of the Cold War. The operation implodes almost immediately, leaving Troy stranded behind enemy lines with no backup and no plan. He’s found by Nikolai Ustinov (Kenneth Branagh), a gruff, oddly Americaphilic ex-KGB agent who has every reason to turn him in and none, at first, to help him. What follows is a buddy comedy dressed up as an espionage thriller Troy’s survival depends entirely on an alliance neither man wants, between two people the entire geopolitical moment has told to be enemies.

The Cast and the People Behind the Camera of Mayday

Alongside Reynolds and Branagh, the cast includes Maria Bakalova as Anna Ustinov, Marcin Dorociński as Alexander Volkov, and David Morse as Harold Kelly. The film comes from writer-director duo Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley, the team behind Game Night and Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves – two films that built their reputations on the exact skill Mayday needs most: making genuine comedy and genuine stakes coexist in the same scene without either one undercutting the other. Production fell to Skydance Media alongside Reynolds’ own Maximum Effort banner, with principal photography taking place in Montreal under the working title Blackbird.

Mayday Budget and a Very Unusual Release Decision

Apple TV’s Buddy Comedy Movie Mayday

Here’s the part of Mayday’s story that has nothing to do with the plot: reports have pegged its budget well into nine figures, placing it firmly among the most expensive movies Apple has ever produced. And yet it’s heading straight to Apple TV+ with no theatrical release at all.

That decision traces back to Fly Me to the Moon, Apple’s 2024 star-driven original that reportedly lost more than $80 million at the box office despite a comparable premise and pedigree. Rather than risk repeating that outcome, Apple appears to be reserving theaters strictly for prestige awards plays and routing its bigger, starrier action-comedies directly to subscribers instead. It’s a fascinating bet: whether a $100 million movie can still feel like an event when the only ticket required is a subscription.

Why Ryan Reynolds Is Comedy’s Most Reliable Weapon

There’s a reason Apple built an entire marketing push around Reynolds’ involvement before a single review existed. Few actors working today have turned a specific comedic register – rapid-fire, self-aware, gleefully willing to break the fourth wall and mock the very movie he’s in into as durable a brand.

Deadpool didn’t just make Reynolds a star; it proved an R-rated, meta-referential sense of humor could carry a franchise to over a billion dollars globally, with Deadpool & Wolverine becoming the highest-grossing R-rated film ever released. That instinct for comedy sharp enough to feel dangerous, but warm enough to stay likable, runs through everything from The Proposal to Free Guy to his first Apple TV+ outing, the musical comedy Spirited.

Reynolds has earned a Golden Globe nomination for his work in Deadpool, a rare feat for a comic-book performance, and his off-screen instincts have become inseparable from his on-screen brand – his Maximum Effort marketing company turned Aviation Gin and Mint Mobile into cultural punchlines before selling both for enormous returns. That’s precisely why audiences walk into any Reynolds comedy with elevated expectations: he’s not just performing jokes, he’s engineered an entire persona where the audience trusts he’s in on every one of them before they land. Mayday is betting that trust extends to a Cold War setting most of his fans have never seen him occupy.

Kenneth Branagh: The Unlikely Comic Foil With a Shakespearean Résumé

Apple TV | Mayday | Kenneth Branagh

If Reynolds is the obvious reason to watch Mayday, Kenneth Branagh might be the more interesting one. Branagh built his reputation as one of the finest interpreters of Shakespeare to ever work in film, directing and starring in acclaimed adaptations of Henry V and Hamlet before becoming, improbably, an Academy Award record-holder: he’s the first person in Oscar history nominated across seven different individual categories, spanning acting, directing, and both original and adapted screenplay. His long wait for an actual statue ended in 2022, when Belfast – his semi-autobiographical drama about growing up in Northern Ireland – won him Best Original Screenplay.

Beyond his own films, Branagh has spent the last decade becoming one of the more surprising blockbuster chameleons in the business: playing Hercule Poirot across three of his own directorial efforts, joining Christopher Nolan’s ensembles in Dunkirk and Tenet, and turning up as the gleefully vain Gilderoy Lockhart in the Harry Potter franchise. That range is exactly what makes him such a compelling match for Reynolds here – Branagh has quietly proven for years that gravitas and comic timing aren’t opposites, and Mayday is asking him to lean fully into the latter opposite one of the medium’s most relentlessly funny leading men.

The Bottom Line

Mayday is a strange, promising collision: a nine-figure production with no theatrical safety net, a director duo who specialize in making action and comedy trust each other, and two lead performances built on genuinely different, genuinely complementary strengths. Whether Apple’s streaming-first bet pays off may say as much about the platform’s future as it does about the movie itself.

Mayday premieres globally on Apple TV+ on September 4, 2026.
